What the workflow looks like at the terminal

Four actions cover almost everything a clerk does with a gift card: activate, redeem, redeem part of a balance, and check a balance. Each one runs against the same real-time ledger, so a card sold at one location works instantly at another.

  • Activate: ring the gift card as an item, swipe or scan the card, enter the load amount, and the card is live on the shared balance ledger before the receipt prints.
  • Redeem: tender the check to gift card, swipe or key the card number, and the balance is drawn down in real time.
  • Partial redemption: when the balance is less than the check, the POS applies the full remaining balance and leaves the difference on the check for a second tender.
  • Balance check: run a balance inquiry from the same menu; the terminal prints or displays the current balance without moving funds.
